Innovative AQ sensors

Distributed sensor networks across Athens and Greece

APCG operates urban air-quality sensor networks that provide near real-time information on particulate and gaseous pollutants.

The Thissio Air Monitoring Station serves as the reference site for the evaluation and calibration of the monitoring systems deployed across the Greater Athens Area and other parts of Greece.

Near real-time PM2.5 monitoring

Through the YPATIA operational unit, APCG has installed more than 25 PurpleAir PA-II optical monitors at residential locations throughout the Greater Athens Area.

The PANACEA national research infrastructure supports the expansion of this network across Greece. Measurements from more than 100 monitors are available through the APCG online visualisation platform.

Multi-pollutant urban monitoring

APCG participated in the EMISSION national project, establishing monitoring locations across the Athens basin using clusters of medium- and low-cost sensors.

Six AQMesh systems measure NOx, O3, CO, PM2.5 and PM10 at representative locations across Attica.

More than ten custom low-cost systems, developed with the University of West Attica, monitor NO2, O3 and PM2.5.

Systematic sensor calibration

Medium- and low-cost devices are regularly intercompared and calibrated against collocated reference-grade instruments at the Thissio Air Monitoring Station.

Sensor systems used by APCG

The networks combine commercial monitoring systems, custom-built devices and portable instruments for fixed, mobile and personal-exposure measurements.

Measuring personal exposure

APCG uses portable instruments for pedestrian, mobile and personal monitoring to improve the characterisation of population exposure to atmospheric pollutants.

  • Black-carbon micro-aethalometers
  • Optical particle counters
  • Personal exposure instruments
  • Passive gaseous-pollutant samplers
