We perform Earth-system, atmospheric, chemical transport and radiative-transfer modelling.

APCG develops and operates computational systems for atmospheric simulations, high-resolution air-quality applications, climate studies and the processing of large scientific datasets.

High-performance computing for atmospheric science

The APCG modelling team operates specialised computational facilities for atmospheric simulations and large-data processing.

The infrastructure includes a Dell R540 rack server with two Intel Xeon Gold 5218 processors, 32 CPU cores, 201 GB of DDR4 memory, 8 TB of RAID storage and a Linux operating environment.

Modelling activities are supported by annual computational grants from the Greek Research and Technology Network for access to the national ARIS high-performance computing facility.

EC-Earth

EC-Earth is a coupled European Earth-system model used for climate predictions and projections. It combines atmospheric, land-surface, ocean and sea-ice components.

APCG contributes to the TM5 atmospheric chemistry and transport model integrated within EC-Earth and to the representation of dust, aerosols and soluble iron deposition.

COSMO-ART

COSMO-ART is a regional atmospheric model that directly couples meteorology, atmospheric chemistry and aerosol dynamics.

APCG applies the model over Greece and Athens to investigate aerosol-radiation, cloud and atmospheric-chemistry interactions.

WRF and EPISODE-CityChem

WRF provides mesoscale numerical weather prediction, while EPISODE-CityChem simulates reactive pollutant chemistry and transport at city scale.

The combined system supports applications over Athens and other urban areas at resolutions ranging from one kilometre down to approximately one hundred metres.

TAPM

A computationally efficient meteorology and dispersion model for local-scale air pollution, chemistry and deposition studies.

WRF and FLEXPART

A forecasting and dispersion system used to simulate atmospheric plumes from industrial accidents and potential emission events.

Box modelling

Tools used to study ozone, carbon monoxide, inorganic aerosol formation, atmospheric oxidation and particle acidity.

An open-source method for producing high-resolution urban emission inventories for European air-quality modelling.

SOLEA develops renewable-energy monitoring, forecasting, planning and operational applications for public and private users.

Its modelling activities include radiative transfer simulations, solar-energy forecasting, high-performance computing and cloud-motion analysis.
